e-book store for Apple’s
Apple’s hoping to recreate the magic of what iTunes did for music with the addition of a vast selection of electronic books. Announced at Apple’s event today, the iBook store.
Book pricing has been set similarly to what’s offered on Amazon.com’s Kindle platform — the first book shown at Apple’s event was priced $14.99, a Ted Kennedy book (available on Kindle for $14.78).
The books you own will be displayed on a bookshelf and the pages inside the books themselves are displayed on an off-white background. Page turns are handled simply by tapping on the right or left sides of the screen and showcase a nice page-curling effect.
According to Jobs, “Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this tech. We’re gonna stand on their shoulders and go farther. Five of the largest publishers in the world are supporting us with all their books and we want everyone in there.”
The iPad will support the popular ePub format and authors will be able to embed multimedia such as photos, videos, and audio files directly into books. That’s a cool feature for standard books and an outstanding feature for textbooks. Imagine your history book containing video and audio snippets.

Art Deco Paradise Opening Soon
Welcome to First & Hope, slated to open March or April at the Promenade Plaza replacing Ristorante Promenade downown. Newcomers to the restaurant business, Terry Brewer and Parker Martin have ambitious plans for First & Hope to become a destination for concertgoers headed to Disney Hall or the Music Center. It is an art deco lovers dream filled with custom chandeliers, high-backed booths, a metallic bar, and tons of dark wood. Moving through the still very under construction space, owners say it will have the look and feel of a 1940s supper club – think prohibition era cocktails and updated versions of food reminiscent of a Baby Boomer’s childhood (uh, The Tar Pit anyone?). Instead of fried chicken look for fried quail, plus short ribs short stack on the menu for brunch, and an innovative meatloaf that manages to fit foie gras and gin into the mix all created by chef Shelley Cooper.
Once complete, the lobby/bar area will house an Enomatic wine dispenser serving up glasses of vino otherwise only available by the bottle. In addition, on offer, a full menu with dishes sorted into the categories Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. The concept here is that if you are rushing to a show and have 30 minutes, you can drink a glass of wine and order a Small dish, specifically designed to come out of the kitchen quickly and get you to the show on time.
At the back of the dining area is the temporarily named Cabaret at First & Hope. Outfitted with custom trimmings and more art deco accents, the Cabaret will feature a stage to showcase live music from jazz to Broadway-style shows.

West Yellowstone soldier was killed
HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The Department of Defense says a 29-year-old West Yellowstone soldier has died of noncombat related injuries in Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Thaddeus S. Montgomery died Wednesday at Lorengal Outpost in Afghanistan's mountainous Kunar Province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated.
The Decatur Daily in Tennessee reported that Montgomery lived in Decatur at one point and attended St. Ann's School and Decatur High School.
Lucy Schrimster, a friend of Montgomery's in Tennessee, told the newspaper he was popular and well-liked, saying, "if you could have seen his smile, you'd have known why."
